GLOUCESTER — Chief Eric Smith, Chief Edward Conley and Department of Public Works Director Michael Hale report that lifeguards and bystanders pulled a man from the water at Good Harbor Beach on Tuesday afternoon.
On Tuesday, June 24, at approximately 12:35 p.m., the Gloucester Police and Fire Departments were notified by 911 that a man was pulled from the water at Good Harbor Beach by lifeguards and bystanders.
First responders arrived at the beach to find that an off-duty nurse and City of Gloucester lifeguards pulled an unresponsive 77-year-old male out of the water, and then began CPR. Lifeguards and the nurse also applied an automated external defibrillator, administering one shock.
When Gloucester first responders arrived, they found the patient breathing and responsive on the beach. The patient was transported by Gloucester Fire Department Ambulance to Addison Gilbert Hospital, and from there was transported by ambulance to the Intensive Care Unit at Beverly Hospital, where he is in stable condition.
Gloucester Fire Rescue 3, Engine 1 and Car 3 responded to the incident along with Gloucester Police.
The City of Gloucester Lifeguards involved in the rescue are Missy Lohnes and John Dalone.
“An off-duty nurse and our City of Gloucester Lifeguards saved this man’s life,” said Chief Smith. “I want to thank them all for their quick, compassionate, and effective response. This patient was already being well cared for when we arrived on scene, and that quick response by those at the beach was critical in ensuring this incident had a positive outcome.”
