DURHAM – Superintendent Dr. Robert Shaps and Principal Misty Lowe are proud to announce that a second-grade Mast Way student won the HAVEN Education Design Contest.
Eleanor “Ella” VanDenBerg won HAVEN Education’s 18th Annual Design Contest and was honored during a ceremony on June 10. Representatives from HAVEN Education and their puppets visited Ms. Laliberte’s second-grade classroom to surprise Ella with a certificate and special t-shirts for the whole class.
The shirts featured VanDenBerg’s winning design, an orange and yellow striped cat, with the catchphrase “Meow Body Belongs to Me.” VanDenBerg’s design was one of 400 entries HAVEN Education received for this year’s annual design contest.
VanDenBerg’s design will also be included in HAVEN Education’s coloring book, which is given to students in Grades 1 and 2 during school visits.
The annual design contest is open to students in Grades K-4 and must feature a positive message for children about keeping their bodies safe as part of HAVEN Education’s mission.
HAVEN Education is a non-profit organization that visits school districts across Rockingham and Stafford Counties to teach children about personal body safety, violence prevention, and more. The organization visits over 12,500 students throughout the year to provide age-appropriate educational presentations on safe body practices.
“I am so proud of Ella for her hard work in the design contest. It was amazing watching her idea come to life,” said Principal Lowe. “I would also like to thank HAVEN Education for their continued partnership with our district, as well as recognizing their representatives who visited our school to present Ella with her certificate and shirts.”
