WILMINGTON — The Wilmington Police Department is pleased to share that Deputy Chief Brian Pupa has been named as the next Chief. He will begin his new role upon Chief Desmond’s retirement on Sept. 5.

Deputy Pupa was selected as the next Chief of Police by Town Manager Eric Slagle on Tuesday, June 24.

Deputy Pupa joined the Wilmington Police Department in 1997. His vast knowledge of the community and dedication to service propelled him through his career in Wilmington, rising through the ranks until he was named Deputy Chief in 2019.

With over 27 years of law enforcement experience, he has played a key role in several programs and initiatives, including senior outreach programs, accreditation and the department’s social worker integration program. He also served as the department’s grant administrator from 2002 to 2006.

A notable achievement includes the launch of a college internship program for community members to work with the department. Through Deputy Pupa’s leadership, four interns went on to become Wilmington Police officers.

He earned his master’s degree in criminal justice from Suffolk University and graduated from the FBI National Academy in 2017. He also holds a J.D. from the Massachusetts School of Law and was admitted to the Bar in 2010.

“I am ready to lead the Wilmington Police Department with a continued commitment to professional excellence and community partnership,” said Deputy Pupa. “It is truly an honor to be selected as the next Chief. I would like to thank Town Manager Slagle for appointing me to this new position, as well as Chief Desmond, whose profound leadership and expertise prepared me for this next chapter in my career. I wish him the best in his well-deserved retirement.”

“I would like to congratulate Deputy Pupa on his promotion to Chief,” said Chief Desmond. “He plays an important role in our community policing initiatives and goes above and beyond for the residents of Wilmington and our officers. I have no doubt he will make an excellent Chief whose passion for his community will be seen each day.”

“I’m excited to have the opportunity to appoint Deputy Pupa as our new Chief. The choice to lead a town’s police department is one of the most important a Town Manager can make,” said Town Manager Slagle. “I have no doubt that Deputy Pupa is ready for this challenge, and have every confidence that he will be an excellent Chief for the residents of Wilmington.”
