AMESBURY — Fire Chief James Nolan reports that the Amesbury Fire Department responded after a young child was struck by a trash truck that was collecting curbside waste in the city.
Amesbury Fire and Police responded to the intersection of California Street and California Lane at 8:52 a.m. on Tuesday. June 24, for a report of a person struck by a vehicle. Upon arrival, rescuers located a 9-year-old boy who was suffering from serious injuries.
The boy was conscious and alert and was able to communicate with rescuers. Amesbury Fire Advanced Life Support ambulance transported the boy to Portsmouth Regional Hospital where he was last reported to be in stable condition. The boy is expected to be transferred to a Boston hospital for treatment of his injuries.
The driver, operating a vehicle from G. Mello Disposal Corp., remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities.
The incident is under investigation by the Amesbury Police and Fire Departments with assistance from the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section and State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section.
