BEVERLY — Chief John G. LeLacheur and Fire Chief Peter K. O’Connor report that the Beverly Police and Fire Departments responded to a plane crash early Thursday morning near the grounds of Beverly Regional Airport.
On Thursday, June 19, at approximately 8:46 a.m., Beverly Police and Fire responded to reports of a plane crash on Sam Fonzo Drive, just outside Beverly Airport.
Upon arrival, crews located a single-engine piston aircraft with significant damage, with two occupants trapped inside. The plane appeared to be resting against a utility pole.
Two men were inside the plane, a pilot and a passenger. One occupant was pronounced dead on scene, and the other man was transported via medical helicopter to a hospital with serious injuries.
At this time, there have been no reports of any ground injuries or additional property damage in the area.
The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board have been notified and will be investigating the crash. The Essex County District Attorney’s Office was also notified.
Mutual aid was provided at the scene by the Danvers Fire Department and the Massachusetts State Police.
