NEWPORT — Chief Travis Bingham reports that the Newport Police Department arrested a Derby man on multiple motor vehicle charges following a brief pursuit.
GERIN FORTIN, AGE 28, of DERBY, was arrested and charged with the following:
- Eluding a Police Officer
- Grossly Negligent Operation of a Motor Vehicle
- Excessive Speed
On Tuesday, June 17, at approximately 3:32 p.m. Newport Police observed a black 2007 Honda Civic that had a cracked windshield and was missing an inspection sticker, leaving the Circle K on the Derby line. Officers attempted to conduct a motor vehicle stop when the driver of the vehicle fled the scene, nearly hitting a Newport Police cruiser.
Officers, while pursuing the vehicle, observed the driver operating at a high rate of speed and crossing the marked double-yellow lines, almost hitting several oncoming vehicles.
Due to safety concerns, officers discontinued pursuit of the vehicle and requested additional units to respond to the area of Valley Road and Derby Road. Newport Police later observed the Honda Civic traveling on Whittier Road.
Vermont State Police and Orleans County Sheriffs also responded to Whittier Road.
The Newport K9 Unit and Vermont State Police Troopers located the vehicle in a field off Whitter Road.
K9 Units were able to track the driver and passenger in a direction that allowed perimeter units to locate the two individuals in a nearby shed. The operator was later identified as FORTIN.
FORTIN was arrested without incident.
During a preliminary investigation, it was determined that FORTIN had two active warrants.
FORTIN was held on $2,500 bail and is expected to be arraigned in Orleans Criminal Court on Wednesday, June 18.
