NEW LONDON — Superintendent John Fortney and Athletic Director Taylor Lipinski are pleased to announce the 2024-2025 Kearsarge Regional Middle School Doug MacDonald Sportsmanship Award Winners: Charlotte Knox and Tanner Stafford.

Grade 8 students Knox and Stafford, both three-sport athletes, were presented the Doug MacDonald Sportsmanship Award during KRMS’s end-of-year athletic award ceremony on June 17.

The Doug MacDonald Sportsmanship award is given to one male and one female athlete who demonstrate compassion, empathy and sportsmanship through the school year and beyond. It is awarded to student-athletes who go above and beyond in their individual sports, proving they are exceptional team players who strive for excellence each day. It celebrates individuals whose actions reflect what it means to compete fiercely, care deeply and commit fully.

Knox participated in field hockey and basketball and was called up to play junior varsity softball this season. She is described as a dedicated leader whose enthusiasm created a positive team atmosphere across each sport.

Stafford participated in soccer, basketball, and spring track and field. During his track and field season, Stafford placed in three categories at the New Hampshire Interscholastic Athletic Association (NHIAA) for the 100, 400, and 800-meter races, earning him a spot at the Meet of Champions (MOC). During the MOC, Stafford placed sixth in both the 400 and the 800-meter races, accomplishing a personal best in both. He is described as hardworking, often being a role model for his teammates.

“Charlotte and Tanner have been instrumental in building a positive team atmosphere across their sports, and I want to congratulate them on receiving this well-deserved acknowledgment,” said Athletic Director Lipinski. “They both truly embody what it means to be a Kearsarge Cougar. It is an honor to see their passion and determination shine on and off the field.”

The KRMS Doug MacDonald Sportsmanship Award has been awarded to students since 2014, shortly after the retirement of beloved science teacher and coach Doug MacDonald following a 45-year career. He dedicated his career to supporting students through athletics, making a difference for kids both in and out of the classroom.
