TOWNSEND — Chief James Sartell is inviting the public and the press to attend as the Townsend Police Department and Town of Townsend hold a special event to swear in the department’s newest member, K9 Ruby.
WHEN:
Tuesday, June 17, at 6:30 p.m.
WHERE:
Townsend Town Hall, 272 Main St, Townsend, MA
WHAT:
The Townsend Police Department is holding a special ceremony to swear in the department’s newest member, K9 Ruby, a puppy who will be trained to become a search and rescue dog once she is fully grown.
Ruby is a 12-week-old Bloodhound who was born and raised by Bluegrass Bloodhounds in Kentucky. The cost of obtaining her was paid by Northeast Houndsmen, an Athol-based organization that assists communities by training dogs and their handlers to excel in the rescue and recovery of those in need.
As she grows, K9 Ruby will receive basic obedience training and will make public appearances at community events with Townsend Police. Later, she will receive specific tracking training and earn certifications in tracking.
In addition to a contribution paying for the cost of obtaining K9 Ruby, donations from community members and local businesses will pay for the cost of caring for her, meaning taxpayers will be charged nothing for her service.
The swearing-in ceremony is meant to be an opportunity for the public to meet K9 Ruby, and she will be sticking around after being sworn in to meet and greet community members.
“Come say hello, snap a photo, and help us celebrate this special addition to our police family,” said Chief Sartell. “The generosity of our community made the addition of K9 Ruby possible, and we are eager to share her with that same community so our residents can get to know her.”
