NEWBURYPORT — City Marshal Matthew Simons reports that the Newburyport Police Department is investigating an accident in which a police cruiser was involved in an accident with a 13-year-old pedestrian.
On Thursday, June 5, at approximately 2:30 p.m., the Newburyport Police and Fire Departments responded to the Rupert A. Nock Middle School, 70 Low St., for a report of an accident involving a police cruiser and a teenage student from the school.
A preliminary investigation determined that a marked police cruiser, which was not responding to an emergency, collided with a 13-year-old boy who was crossing Low Street in front of the Middle School.
The accident occurred during school dismissal. According to several witnesses, the boy darted out between two parked cars and ran across the street in front of the cruiser which was traveling eastbound.
Preliminary investigation and witness accounts suggest that the cruiser had no warning and that there was nothing the officer could have done to avoid the accident.
The officer operating the cruiser immediately rendered aid to the student, along with other arriving first responders.
The boy was taken by ambulance to Anna Jacques Hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening. The officer who was driving the cruiser was evaluated on scene but not transported.
“This is an extremely traumatic event for everyone involved,” said Marshal Simons. “I’m relieved that the student was not injured seriously, and grateful to the officer involved for acting calmly while being involved in a very stressful event. The officer’s attentiveness and quick reaction undoubtedly prevented what could have been more serious injuries.”
The circumstances surrounding the collision remain under investigation by Sgt. Jason Kohan from the Newburyport Police Department. Anyone who witnessed the collision, and has not already spoken with police, is asked to call Newburyport Police at 978-462-4411, ext. 1.
