Middleborough Fire Department Responds to Fatal Crash on Interstate 495

MIDDLEBOROUGH — Chief Owen Thompson reports that the Middleborough Fire Department responded to a fatal crash on Interstate 495 on Thursday afternoon.

On Thursday, May 15, at approximately 12:28 p.m., Middleborough Fire responded to a report of a single-vehicle crash with serious injuries on I-495 north, near the Cherry Street overpass.

On arrival, crews located a vehicle on fire off the side of the road in the woods. Firefighters worked quickly to extinguish the flames, and all northbound lanes of the highway were shut down.

An adult male, who was found outside the vehicle, was pronounced dead on arrival.

An adult female, who was still inside the vehicle, was also pronounced dead at the scene.

No further injuries were reported.

The entire northbound side of I-495 was temporarily closed for about half an hour, but the left lane has since been reopened. The right and breakdown lanes remain closed while emergency crews remain on scene.

Coastal Ambulance also assisted at the scene.

The crash is under investigation by the Massachusetts State Police.

All further inquiries should be referred to the Massachusetts State Police or the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office.
