BROOKLINE — The Brookline Department of Public Works is pleased to announce that it is a recipient of the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC) On-Street Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Solutions Grant Program.
The Town of Brookline is one of 15 municipalities that are recipients of the program and will receive support to install on-street EV charging stations.
The On-Street Charging Solutions is MassCEC’s consultant-run program led by Commonwealth Electrical Technologies, and supported by Leidos. The program provides technical and financial support to municipalities interested in piloting on-street EV charging stations.
MassCEC’s consultant team will provide implementation and associated technical support. It will cover the design, procurement, equipment and installation of charging projects at up to three sites in Brookline, with four to 10 Level 2 charging ports per site. The program is valued at upwards of $500,000; however, since Brookline is a grant recipient, there is no cost to the Town.
The program is expected to be complete in late 2026, and following completion, the Town will own, operate, maintain and set pricing for the new EV charging stations.
“The Town has made significant strides to expand public EV charging in our parks and Town-owned parking lots,” said Brookline Commissioner of Public Works Erin Chute. “Under this program, the DPW is excited to pilot curbside EV charging.”
In recent years, the Brookline Transportation Division and the Highway Division led the planning and building of publicly accessible EV charging stations. The Transportation and Highway Divisions, in pursuing EV projects, is now working in collaboration with the Town’s recently established Sustainability and Natural Resources Division.
“EVs will play a significant role in combating climate change and reducing greenhouse gas emissions,” said Brookline Director of Sustainability and Natural Resources Alexandra Vecchio. “With the addition of on-street EV charging, the DPW aims to reduce barriers to EV conversion by prioritizing high-density residential areas, where residents otherwise might not have access to private off-street charging.”
The On-Street Charging Solutions program includes a community engagement approach to solicit input from residents on the site locations for the EV charging stations. For additional details and to offer input, visit the Brookline Public EV Charging webpage.
Additional questions about the program should be directed to the Brookline DPW Sustainability and Natural Resources Division at sustainability@brooklinema.gov and 617-730-2088.
