Maynard Fire Congratulates Captain Mark Tomyl on his Retirement Following 35 Years of Service

MAYNARD — Chief Angela Lawless and the Maynard Fire Department would like to recognize Captain Mark Tomyl on his retirement.

Capt. Tomyl’s last shift, a 24-hour shift, will be on May 13. On May 14, he will have a special send-off, being driven from the station in Engine 2, with a radio announcement commemorating his 35 years of service. Coffee and refreshments will be served at 7:30 a.m., with Capt. Tomyl’s radio send-off at 8 a.m.

Capt. Tomyl was born in Maynard and graduated from Maynard High School. He was hired as a call firefighter in 1990 and joined the department full-time in 1997.

Tomyl was promoted to Captain in 2023. He has also been the Union President for 16 years.

Outside of his work with Maynard Fire, Capt. Tomyl was a member of the District 14 Fire Investigator team in 2012, investigating countless fires in Maynard and the other 23 district communities. As a fire investigator, he has completed numerous trainings and programs at the Massachusetts Fire Academy, at National Fire Academy conferences, and more.

In preparation for his retirement, Capt. Tomyl has been mentoring the department’s next fire investigator, as well as other members of the District 14 Fire Investigator team.

“Capt. Tomyl went above and beyond for our department and our community. His commitment to service, continuous education, and the pride he has shown in his work are truly admirable,” said Chief Lawless. “I am honored to have worked alongside him here in Maynard. On behalf of the entire department, we congratulate Capt. Tomyl on his successful 35 years of service and wish him the best of luck in his retirement.”
