MEDFIELD — Superintendent Jeffrey J. Marsden and Principal Nat Vaughn are proud to announce that the Blake Middle School Unified Basketball team recently completed its second season of play.

The Blake Middle School Unified Basketball team included more than 40 participants in its second season, traveling to three different schools and hosting two games. The team accomplished its goal for the season of coming together to provide an outlet for recreation and athletics to all.

The team is thankful to be supported by the Blake Middle School community, as well as the members of the Medfield Special Education Parent Advisory Council, the Blake PTO, the Medfield School Committee, Medfield Coalition for Public Education, and the Medfield Police Department. The team is coached by Susan Bycoff, a math teacher at Blake Middle School, and Matt Marenghi, a school counselor.

“It has been wonderful to see our Blake community come together to support this endeavor,” Bycoff said. “We even had therapy dogs from Medfield’s elementary and secondary schools, as well as Nova, our Medfield Police K-9, come to join in on the fun.”

During the season, the Blake Middle School Unified Basketball team rallied together under the theme of “ONETEAM.” The team also designed sweatshirts bearing the tagline.

At the end of the season, the team sent a letter to families, thanking all the parents for their continued support of the Blake Middle School Unified Basketball team.

The letter also told parents about how Unified Basketball empowered all the players to achieve personal goals and how these athletes are now being challenging to keep going.

“It is hard to believe this season has come to an end,” the letter stated. “We have spent our time together discussing the game within the game with our team members. Every athlete has their game within the game, and we have asked them to think about what their game is. Is your game learning a new sport? Learning to share? Riding a bus to a different school? Being the best fan you can be? Making a basket? Helping a teammate succeed? Once you have found your game, now challenge yourself to notice the game of others and help them find success.”

Unified Sports brings together students with and without disabilities to train and compete on the same team. In addition to Unified Basketball, Blake Middle School also runs a Unified Bocce team.

The Blake Middle School is now planning to host an open house in May to prepare for its Unified Bocce Season which starts in fall of 2025.
