WILMINGTON — The following is a joint statement from Police Chief Joseph Desmond and Superintendent Glenn Brand regarding the student ‘assassin’ game that is played annually among seniors:
“The Wilmington Police Department has recently responded to several incidents that stem from the so-called ‘Senior Assassin Game.’ We want to reach out with an important message regarding the recent activities involving our high school seniors, specifically playing the ‘Senior Assassin’ game.
“While we understand that this game is intended to be a fun, celebratory tradition for many seniors, it has raised significant safety concerns in the community. The nature of the game — involving water guns, ambush-style tactics, and sometimes late-night or early-morning pursuits — can easily be mistaken by bystanders or law enforcement as a real threat, leading to potentially dangerous situations.
“Our officers have already received several calls from concerned residents who have witnessed suspicious behavior associated with the game. We urge all participants and parents to understand the real risks involved. A moment of confusion could have serious consequences.
“We ask our seniors to consider the broader impact of their actions and find safer ways to celebrate this milestone. We urge parents/guardians to talk with their children about the risks and encourage responsible decision-making.
“We all want to see our seniors enjoy their final months of high school, but we also want everyone to stay safe and avoid any unnecessary dangers.
“As always, the Wilmington Police Department, working in partnership with the Wilmington Public Schools, is committed to protecting and supporting our youth and our entire community.”
