MEDFIELD — Superintendent Jeffrey J. Marsden and Principal Robert Parga are proud to announce that the Medfield High Schools’ student musicians won several gold medals at state festivals held recently.
The Medfield High School Jazz Choir, as a result of winning a gold medal on April 12 at the Massachusetts Association of Jazz Educators Choir Festival, was invited to perform at the Hatch Shell Showcase on the Charles River Esplanade on Sunday, May 4.
“This is an incredible accomplishment and a wonderful opportunity for our Medfield High School Jazz Choir. We look forward to another amazing performance in a prestigious setting at the Hatch Shell,” said K-12 Music Department Head and High School Band Director Jason Bielik. “We couldn’t be prouder of them and all of our performers in our bands, choirs and orchestra.”
In addition to the gold medal success of the 24-member Medfield High School Jazz Choir, the Medfield High School Concert Band, the Medfield High School Choir and the Medfield High School Orchestra each earned gold medals at the Massachusetts Instrumental and Choral Conductors Association State Festival on April 4. Gold medals are awarded to groups that achieve the highest rating possible, rather than judging only one band, choir or orchestra as the festival’s top-ranking competitor.
“This is the first time all three groups have been awarded this top rating,” Director Bielik said. “Medfield is one of only five programs in the state to have all of its groups earn this rating in 2025. Schools receive ratings as opposed to rankings. Often, a school will send multiple groups, as we do each year. But it’s very rare that a school will send a band, a chorus, and an orchestra, and have all three earn the highest possible rating of gold.”
There are 60 students in the Medfield High School Concert Band, 60 students in the Medfield High School Choir, and 40 students in the Medfield High School Orchestra.
The Medfield High School Jazz Band, which includes 20 musicians, earned a silver medal at the Massachusetts Association of Jazz Educators Big Band Festival on Feb. 26.
The Medfield High School A Cappella Ensemble, a group known more commonly as SoundWaves, also earned its first ever top three finish at the New England Voices Contemporary A Cappella Festival held on Feb. 1.
Another highlight of the school year for Medfield High School musicians was a trip to Disney World in Orlando from March 13-16. The Medfield High School Concert Band, the Medfield High School Choir and the Medfield High School Orchestra each performed and participated in workshops during the trip.
“The Disney World Trip is a very popular trip for music programs across the country, as the performance and workshop opportunities are exceptionally educational and engaging for students,” Director Bielik said. “When combined with going to Disney World as a day at the park, it creates a truly unforgettable experience for everyone.”
In addition to Bielik, who is Director of the Concert Band, the student musicians are led by Ann Marie Tremblay (Choir, Jazz Choir, and SoundWaves), Ryan Dexter (Jazz Band) and Brenna Evans (Orchestra).
“Although I could certainly say a lot about all the students and directors, the reality about the successes this year is fairly simple,” Director Bielik said. “We are very fortunate in Medfield to be able to offer our students so many opportunities. The reason for the successes of this year — and previous years — is because students have taken full advantage of those opportunities and have worked incredibly hard to achieve great things.”
Superintendent Marsden and Principal Parga congratulated the bands and choirs, thanked the school’s music staff and credited the students’ parents for all the accomplishments achieved this school year.
“Our Music Department is a source of immense pride for Medfield High School,” Principal Parga said. “It takes an incredible number of rehearsals and individual practice sessions for our musicians to perform so well together. We always look forward to hearing what’s in store. Bravo to all of our student musicians. Thank you to all of our music educators who make this possible, and credit to the parents as well for all their contributions.”
“One of the highlights of being the superintendent of Medfield Public Schools is getting to hear the amazing performances of our bands, our choirs and our orchestra,” Superintendent Marsden said. “It really is phenomenal. Thank you to all of our students for all of your hard work and thank you to our music teachers for your incredible efforts to prepare our students for the incredible performances, to which we all look forward. I’d also like to offer a special thanks to the parents for their support of our music programs.”
