WHERE:

WHAT:

The Lowell Police Department, in partnership with the The Middlesex Sheriff’s Office, is hosting a “Safer Homes, Safer Communities” Gift Cards for Guns event, with funding from the Executive Office of Health and Human Services’ Safe and Successful Youth Initiative.

The initiative will provide residents a safe and convenient way to dispose of unwanted and unsecured firearms and ammunition with the hope of reducing the risk of theft, accidental discharge, suicide and domestic violence.

Since 2013, the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office has partnered with local police departments and community groups to support “Safer Homes, Safer Communities” events in cities and towns across Middlesex County. In total, 17 communities have hosted 44 events since 2013, resulting in the safe and secure destruction of over 2,200 guns. This is the fourth “Safer Homes, Safer Communities” event that Lowell Police and the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office have partnered on.

“Anyone with an unwanted firearm can take advantage of this event to get something back while also contributing to public safety,” said Superintendent Greg Hudon. “This is our fourth time partnering with the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office, and we appreciate their support.”

“The Middlesex Sheriff’s Office is proud to once again partner with our Lowell Police Department colleagues on this important public health and safety initiative,” said Middlesex Sheriff Peter J. Koutoujian.  “Providing residents the opportunity to safely, securely dispose of unwanted firearms makes our homes and our communities safer, by reducing the chance of accidental discharge, self-harm and theft.”

No identification is required to participate. Participants are asked to bring the firearms unloaded, with the safety engaged, in a bag or carrier in the trunk of their vehicle. There is no need to leave the vehicle. Members of Lowell PD and the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office will meet participants at their vehicles on arrival.

The Middlesex Sheriff’s Office and the Massachusetts State Police will safely destroy all guns received.

Participants will receive a grocery gift card for each firearm they turn in. The gift card amounts will range from $25 – $200.

In accordance with state law, individuals planning to turn in firearms should notify the Lowell Police Department at 978-674-4509 in advance. Individuals turning in firearms at the date, time and location arranged for the Gift Cards for Guns event will not be asked for identification.
