Town of Newbury Soliciting Bids for Space for Byfield Fire Station

NEWBURY – The Town of Newbury is soliciting proposals to lease space in or around the Byfield section for a fire station.

NEWBURY – The Town of Newbury is soliciting proposals to lease space in or around the Byfield section for a fire station.

The lease for the current Byfield station at 44 Central St. expires on June 30, meaning the Town must issue a Request for Proposal through a standard public procurement process.

Newbury originally was served by two fire departments, Protection Fire Company No. 1, established in 1922, and Protection Fire Company No. 2, founded in 1942. In 2010, voters combined the two operations into today’s Newbury Fire Department. Company No. 1 maintains ownership of the Byfield station and leases the station to the Town.

The Byfield station is integral to the Department’s operations. It serves as a base for calls for service, as well as fire prevention duties, inspections, public education and training. The Byfield and Morgan Avenue stations are staffed with career firefighters and equipped with full complements of fire and ambulance apparatus. This allows the Department respond strategically based on the location of a call.

The Town, through the Town Administrator, will assess all bids based on stated criteria, including location, total space, bathroom facilities, parking and layout. The Select Board will then review the assessments and select the bidder whose proposal best meets the Fire Department’s and Town’s needs.

The Town will lease space from the selected bidder for three years.

Bids are due no later than Wednesday, May 19, at 1 p.m.
