SEEKONK — Superintendent Rebecca Kidwell and Principal Dr. William V. Whalen III are proud to announce that 17 Seekonk High School (SHS) student athletes gathered in the auditorium on Wednesday, April 16, with family, friends and teammates, to sign commitment letters to play sports at the colleges and universities of their choice.

“Congratulations on your commitment to continue both your academic and athletic career at the college level,” said SHS Principal Dr. Whalen. “This is an incredible achievement for you!”

Dr. Whalen told the audience that according to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), approximately 8 million students participate in high school sports in the United States each year, but only about 495,000 — roughly 6% — will go on to compete at NCAA schools.

“Committing to play a sport at the collegiate level is a great accomplishment,” said Dr. Whalen. “It is the result of years of hard work, dedication and resilience. You’ve shown all of us what it means to pursue excellence not just as an athlete, but in the classroom, and as a leader in our school community.”

Dr. Whalen asked the athletes on stage to remember back to when they were younger and just getting started in the sports in which they now excel.

“Think about the first time you picked up a ball or joined an organized sports team,” said Dr. Whalen. “Your parents and family have been there watching you and supporting you from day one. They are extremely proud of you! How about a round of applause to thank them for all that they have done to support you over the years.”

The crowd of classmates, teammates, extended and immediate families erupted with cheers.

“Watching you grow over the years has certainly been a privilege for me,” said Dr. Whalen. “You’ve represented Seekonk High School with pride, integrity and grit. I have no doubt you’ll bring those same qualities with you to the next level. Please know that your Seekonk High School family is proud of you. We’ll all be cheering you on in this next chapter of your story.”

Each student signed their commitment letter using a special Seekonk High School pen, which they were allowed to keep as a souvenir.

The following students were recognized at SHS’s Signing Day:

We wish them all the luck in the world, as they pursue athletic and academic greatness beyond the halls of Seekonk High School.”
