Superintendent Brad Morgan and Principal Laurie Smith proudly announce that North Middlesex Regional High School Students earned top honors at the annual Massachusetts Instrumental and Choral Conductors Association (MICCA) competitions.

The NMRHS Chamber Choir received a gold medal for its performance during the regional competition at Westborough High School on Saturday, April 5. As a result, students will perform in the MICCA Gold Medal Showcase on Sunday, April 13, from 12-12:20 p.m. at Groton Hill Music Center in Groton.

The NMRHS Treble Choir, also competing at Westborough High School, returned home with a silver medal.

The NMRHS Wind Symphony, competing at Foxborough High School, also earned a silver medal for its performance.

MICCA promotes music education statewide and organizes high school competitions for marching bands, concert bands and orchestras, choral groups, soloists, and ensembles.

Competitions are judged by respected music educators from across the country. Performances are graded on criteria including tone quality, balance and blend, intonation, expression, style and phrasing; group dynamics; rhythm, precision and tempo; technical facility; and music selection.

North Middlesex students are guided by Director of Bands Thomas Souza and Director of Choirs Katie Simko, both of whom are in their first year in the Music Department.

“What an achievement by all of our students. This is something they will never forget,” Principal Smith said. “The judges were incredibly impressed with their performances, and with Tom and Katie for their exceptional work to develop the students’ performance skills and technique. Congratulations to everyone!”
