The Winthrop Police Association and Winthrop Youth Hockey will partner to offer the 2025 Stephen Acone Scholarship Hockey Tournament, the 9th annual event to raise funds for scholarships for Winthrop High School students.
The games will feature players from around town who are over 40 years old, facing off for a good cause. Winthrop Police are typically well-represented among the players. The games raise funds for scholarships via donations. Entrance to watch the games is free.
The Winthrop Police Association and Winthrop Youth Hockey team up on both the annual hockey tournament and on the Officer Stephen Acone Scholarship, which provides $1,000 annually to two Winthrop High School seniors who have played youth hockey.
Officer Acone was a Winthrop Police Officer, youth hockey coach, and former Winthrop High School hockey player who spent his entire life in Winthrop, devoting it to serving his community.
The tournament also provides funding support to six other Winthrop High School scholarships that are sponsored by the Winthrop Police Association.
- The Detective Michael Delehanty Scholarship provides $1,000 annually to two Winthrop seniors in honor of Detective Delehanty, a dedicated Winthrop Police Officer who was a longtime supporter of WINARC.
- The Lt. David Lessard Scholarship provides $1,000 annually to a Winthrop student in honor of Lt. Lessard, who supervised many of the Winthrop Police Department’s community policing initiatives during his 44 years with the department.
- The Detective Robert McFarland Scholarship provides $1,000 annually to a Winthrop student in honor of Detective McFarland, an Air Force veteran who served the Winthrop community for 48 years, helping numerous Winthrop residents during his long career.
- The Officer Charles A. DeMinico Jr. Scholarship provides $1,000 annually to a Winthrop Student in honor of Officer DeMinico, a longtime officer who often helped children cross streets on their way to school.
- The Lt. Joseph Flannery Scholarship provides $1,000 annually to a Winthrop student in honor of Lt. Flannery, who served the town of Winthrop for many years.
- The U.S. Marine Corporal and Patrol Officer Channing MacDonald Scholarship provides $1,000 annually to a Winthrop student in honor of the World War I veteran who also served with Winthrop Police from 1928-1933.
“I encourage everyone to come out and enjoy a fun hockey game while supporting the Winthrop Police Association’s efforts to support the bright young adults at Winthrop High School,” said Chief Goodwin. “I am proud of the Winthrop Police Association for being so involved in the community.”
Those who wish to donate to the Stephen Acone Scholarship Fund can make donations out to the Stephen Acone Scholarship Fund, and either drop them off at the police station or mail them to Winthrop Police, 3 Metcalf Square, Winthrop, MA 02152.
