SANDY — The Utah Chiefs of Police Association is pleased to announce the Find Yourself in Utah Law Enforcement Career Day, part of a multi-year effort to increase recruitment and promote career opportunities in law enforcement while showcasing all that Utah has to offer.

“We estimate that the State of Utah will need to fill 1,000 law enforcement vacancies by the year 2030. This compounds an already historically difficult hiring picture, with many of our police departments and law enforcement already operating short-staffed,” said Chief Brad Bishop, President of UCOPA and Chief of the Payson City Police Department. “Utah offers a multitude of opportunities and benefits, including sign-on bonuses and homebuying stipends for officers, making the American dream of home ownership a reality for a new generation that has faced difficulty. Speaking from experience, Utah is where you put down your roots and start a family, and I couldn’t be happier with my decision to work in this great profession in this great state.”

Find Yourself in Utah Law Enforcement Career Day will be held on April 30, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) in Sandy.

More than four dozen law enforcement agencies across the state will be in attendance showcasing their people, equipment and training as well as the breadth and depth of career opportunities — civilian and sworn — available in the profession of law enforcement in Utah.

This event will feature facetime with leaders and hiring managers across all aspects of policing, corrections, campus safety and law enforcement from large statewide agencies to small rural departments. There will be a hands-on display from local departments, including K9s, Drones, Motorcycles, Helicopters, and more! In addition, there will be representatives from the Utah Women in Law Enforcement, ULEAP (Utah Law Enforcement Administrative Professionals), and Mental Health Clinicians, along with many other critical non-sworn opportunities that support our public safety professionals.

This career day event is an opportunity to hear from agencies across the state about the importance of maintaining and recruiting qualified individuals and helping the next generation of individuals find their purpose and career in Utah. The event will feature:

  • SWAT Team demonstrations
  • K9 search and rescue
  • Drone operation
  • Crime scene analysis/CSI
  • Hands-on displays including patrol cars, all-terrain vehicles, and police e-bikes
  • Police motorcycle demonstrations
  • Utah Highway Patrol helicopter on-site
  • Face-to-face networking with recruiters, chiefs and supervisors from dozens of agencies statewide

Local criminal justice programs at both the high school and college levels are encouraged to attend this event, which will give your students the opportunity to learn more about the wide range of careers in law enforcement.

Since outreach began to high schools and colleges a few weeks ago, more than 500 students have registered to attend the Find Yourself in Utah Law Enforcement Career Day.

FIND YOURSELF IN UTAH DETAILS

The Career Day is a part of the state-wide recruitment and retention campaign, Find Yourself in Utah, which is funded by a state grant funded by the Utah Commission on Criminal and Juvenile Justice.

To formally kick-off this new program, UCOPA recently launched findyourselfinutah.com where those interested can learn about career opportunities and browse all current job openings statewide in one place. On the website, job seekers can also sign up to be contacted by a law enforcement recruiter and get your career started right away.

“Not only is hiring important, but hiring the right people who are dedicated and committed to serving their communities is imperative,” Chief Bishop said. “Two years ago, Utah’s law enforcement leaders stood up and said that competition was counterproductive. Instead of battling each other for a limited applicant pool, what we really need to do is increase the qualified applicant pool. We need to show more people what a career here in Utah looks like for them and for their families. The product of that work has been the Find Yourself in Utah campaign.”

From patrol to aviation, dispatch to forensics, law enforcement in Utah offers a wide range of meaningful career paths. This campaign encourages Utahns and those beyond our state to consider the opportunity to serve and grow in one of the most vibrant, fast-growing states in the nation.
