The Massachusetts Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators (MACLEA) is pleased to announce that multiple campus law enforcement partners’ K9 teams participated in the National Odor Recognition Testing (NORT) and Explosive Detection Skills Training, which was hosted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) National Canine Division.
Last month, K9 units from several MACLEA member organizations took part in the K9 NORT training at the Municipal Police Training Committee (MPTC) Lynnfield Police Academy, in Lynnfield.
The training included testing and certification of K9 teams. K9 teams participated in a variety of exercises, including explosive detection evaluations, and had the opportunity to perform the official NORT single-blind test administered by the ATF.
The training and certifications help ensure that all of the K9 teams, including teams from across eastern Massachusetts, are effective and prepared for their jobs in law enforcement.
MACLEA member organizations that participated in the training and certifications are Endicott College Police, Northeastern University Police, Tufts University Police, Babson College Police, Worcester Polytechnic Institute Police, UMass Boston Police and UMass Amherst Police.
The event and training were supported by Salem Police, Melrose Police, Everett Police and the U.S. National Park Service.
“It was exciting to see so many MACLEA K9 teams get to experience this training and obtain NORT certification,” said MACLEA President Kerry Ramsdell, who is chief of the Endicott College Police Department. “Our K9 teams are a huge asset to each campus they serve, and they go above and beyond in training to be ready for work on campus.”
