LITTLETON — Superintendent Dr. Kelly Clenchy, Principal Michelle Kane and Assistant Principal Rebecca Deacon share that students engaged in play during Time to Play Day, Shaker Lane’s March Spirit Day.
Time to Play Day was inspired by the fact that play is an integral piece of early childhood education.
The students were encouraged to bring in their own board and card games from home to share with their peers, allowing them to shift their focus from academic learning to learning through play for parts of the school day.
Children learn a multitude of skills by playing together, including cognitive development through exploration and experimentation, language development by practicing communication and building creativity and imagination.
Learning through play also increases social-emotional development by encouraging children to share, take turns, follow rules and express and manage emotions.
“Through play, children learn about the world around them,” said Assistant Principal Deacon. “This specially designed Spirit Day allows our students to practice valuable life skills like how to regulate and manage their emotions all while having fun. It’s wonderful to be able to witness their joy.”
