NEWPORT — Chief Travis Bingham reports that Newport Police Department arrested a Newport man with 1st Degree Aggravated Domestic Assault in connection with an incident in which he choked a woman and accidentally fired a firearm.

MATTHEW PAYNE, AGE 51, of NEWPORT, was charged with:

  • 1st Degree Aggravated Domestic Assault
  • Reckless Endangerment

On Monday, March 24, at approximately 8 a.m., multiple Newport Police units responded to a 911 call for a report of a domestic incident in which a gunshot was fired at a home on Short Spring Street.

Officers arrived at PAYNE’s home and took up defensive positions around the home until PAYNE walked outside. A subsequent investigation on scene determined that PAYNE had choked a woman at the scene and accidentally fired a round from a handgun before police arrived.

Officers took custody of a firearm at the scene and located a bullet hole in a ceiling.

PAYNE was taken into custody. He was arraigned later Monday in Orleans Criminal Court, where he was ordered held without bail.

These are allegations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty.
