CANTON — Chief Wendell Robery reports that the Canton Fire Department quickly extinguished a house fire at 10 Oak Hill Drive in Canton.

On Wednesday, March 12, at 1:11 p.m., Canton Fire responded to a report of a structure fire at the single-family home located on a cul-de-sac.

Residents were home when the fire started and called 911 after flames were spotted near solar panels on the roof.

On arrival, fire crews observed flames and smoke coming from the roof of the single-family house, originating from a row of solar panels. The fire extended into the house, but crews at the scene quickly extinguished the flames.

No residents or firefighters were injured as a result of the incident. The fire was fully extinguished in about 30 minutes.

Firefighters at the scene noted rodent activity under the panels and later discovered two deceased squirrels.

“It looks like they likely contributed to the fire,” said Deputy Chief Ed Freitas.

The fire displaced three residents, mostly due to damage to the home’s electrical system.

Canton Fire Department’s Engines 3 and 4, Ladder 1, Ambulance 2 and Car 5, as well as three other staff vehicles, responded to the fire.

Mutual aid was provided at the scene and for station coverage. Apparatus from Norwood and Sharon responded to the scene. A Stoughton engine covered Canton’s Station 1.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
