Concord Police Department Invites Community to Help Name Comfort Dog

CONCORD — The Concord Police Department wants the community’s help in naming its department’s new comfort dog.
This 8-week-old Labrador retriever will become a comfort dog serving with the Concord Police Department after he is picked up from a breeder early next week. In the meantime, the Concord Police Department is inviting the community to take part in a poll to help choose the dog’s name. Middle school students chose “Thor, Tank, and Benji” as possible names when they were surveyed, and now the entire community is being asked to participate, and help make a final decision. CONCORD — The Concord Police Department wants the community’s help in naming its department’s new comfort dog.

The department has been working with Puddleduck Retrievers, a breeder based in Morrill, Maine, and will soon take custody of an 8-week-old male Labrador retriever who is slated to become the department’s new comfort dog.

Comfort dogs provide support to those suffering through traumatic events and help to put people at ease during interactions with police. They can be deployed to tense incidents and emergencies to assist those in crisis or those experiencing trauma. Comfort dogs also serve as ambassadors for the department at community events.

The dog will be handled by School Resource Officer Samantha Simpson. Once the dog is 4 months old, the dog will undergo basic obedience training and comfort training, and may be trained in tracking at a later date.

Prior to the dog arriving in town, Concord Middle School students were surveyed to chose possible names, and they chose Thor, Tank, and Benji. Now the entire Concord community is being asked to pitch in to help make a final selection.

Voting will be open until Friday, March 14.

“I hope our community joins us in helping to choose a name for our newest department member,  now that Concord Middle Schoolers selected three terrific possibilities!” said Chief Thomas Mulcahy. “Our new comfort dog will help us enjoy positive interactions with our community members, and will also help to comfort those who may be experiencing any traumatic incidents.”  We are extremely excited to welcome this new addition to our department!”
