MARLBOROUGH — Assabet Valley Regional Technical High School is gearing up to once again host a burger battle for high school students in culinary arts programs across the state: the Slider Challenge.
WHEN:
Tuesday, March 11, from 10:50 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.
WHERE:
Assabet Valley Regional Technical High School, 215 Fitchburg St., Marlborough
WHO:
Four culinary arts programs from across Massachusetts, each competing with teams of six students:
- Assabet Valley Regional Technical High School
- Bristol-Plymouth Regional Technical School
- Blackstone Valley Technical High School
- Shawsheen Valley Technical High School
WHAT:
The 4th Annual Vocational Slider Challenge is back at Assabet Valley.
For the past four years, Assabet has participated alongside culinary students from across the state in the Vocational Slider Challenge. Assabet hosted the inaugural Slider Challenge in 2021. Shawsheen Tech and Blackstone Valley Tech hosted in the past two years.
The culinary arts programs will again go head-to-head to see who can cook up the tastiest slider.
This year, 115 customers — comprised of Assabet staff, residents of the surrounding area and local chefs — sold out the event. Each customer will receive a voting card with the schools’ names on it, and they will check off their favorite slider.
Each program will have a designated 8-foot skirted table with a chafing dish to hold their creations and a custom sign detailing the fillings for their sliders so voters will know what is in each burger, and who it belongs to.
Schweid & Sons will be providing the ground beef for the burgers and Piantedosi will provide the buns. Sides including french fries, tater tots and onion rings will be provided courtesy of McCain, and Pepsi will supply beverages.
The Epicurean Club of Boston President Tim Foley, HAAC and past President John DiSessa will also be in attendance to help out at the event.
Assabet’s Culinary Arts instructors will be collaborating on this event. The new Baking Instructor Danielle Corkhum will be handling dessert and the new Lead Teacher Chef Alex D’Amcis will be supporting the event. Chef Louis Trudeau will lead the coordination of the event.
The winning team will have their name on a trophy and will keep it for a year. One of the schools will win a donated 22 inch Blackstone Grill with accessories, valued at $300.
(Media members interested in attending are asked to contact Camryn Langille, camryn@jgpr.net, no later than Monday, March. 10. at 5 p.m.)
