Superintendent Amanda Isabelle and Mascoma Valley Regional High School (MVRHS) Principal Tina Fleming are pleased to share that Computer Science Teacher Joanna Marcotte has been named a New Hampshire Affiliate Educator Award winner.
Marcotte was selected for the National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT) Aspirations in Computing Educator Award. The award identifies and celebrates exemplary educators who play a pivotal role in encouraging students to explore their interest in computing and technology.
The award honors those who work inside and/or outside of classroom spaces to increase involvement in computing by providing educational opportunities and working to remove barriers to participation.
Since 2011, more than 1,000 educators have been recognized and have received more than $225,000 in professional development funding to improve their computing education skills.
A 25-year New Hampshire educator, Marcotte has always had a passion for sharing computer science with her students and fellow educators.
Marcotte is a seasoned computer science expert. She has a Master of Education in Educational Technology with a dual certificate in Technology Integration & School Technology Coordination from Boise State University. Additionally, Marcotte is involved in the development team for New Hampshire Computer Science Standards and is a Code.org CS Discoveries and CS A Facilitator.
She shares her knowledge of computer science with other educators in various conference presentations, including the NH Charter School Best Practice Conference, the Christa McAuliffe Technology Conference and the Computer Science Teachers Association of New England Conference.
During her time at MVRHS, Marcotte has expanded the school’s computer science offerings to include Running Start Website Design, Intro to Cyber Security and Intro to Python. She is also in the process of creating a Girls Who Code Club and establishing a Computer Science Honor Society.
“Ms. Marcotte has completely revolutionized the computer science education we are able to provide to students,” said Principal Fleming. “Her passion, leadership and expertise have fueled a passion for computer science in our students that has been so exciting to witness. We are pleased to see her commitment to excellence recognized.”
Marcotte received her first Educator Award in 2019, and received an Honorable Mention for the Award in 2021, 2022 and 2023.
As an awarded educator, she will receive $250 and a personalized trophy.
“Ms. Marcotte is an exemplary role model for our students. Her concerted efforts in ensuring our computer science offerings are inclusive of all students and their interests has enhanced our computer science program significantly,” said Superintendent Isabelle. “We could not be more proud to have Ms. Marcotte working with our students, and we look forward to seeing the ways she continues to inform our district, and our state, about computer science programs.”
