HAMPTON — Superintendent Meredith Nadeau and Principal William McGowan are pleased to share that Winnacunnet Cooperative High School student Sophie Garcia was recently named a Poetry Out Loud regional champion.

Poetry Out Loud allows high school students from across the country to participate in a dynamic poetry recitation competition designed to improve their public speaking skills, help build confidence and teach them about literary history and contemporary life.

The program starts at the local level with a school or participating organization. Winners then may advance to a regional and/or state competition, and ultimately to the national finals.

Garcia – a sophomore at Winnacunnet – was named the school’s Poetry Out Loud champion on Jan. 15.

She then competed in the regional competition against winners from 10 local schools at the Rochester Opera House on Feb. 18. She read two poems, “a song in the front yard” by Gwendolyn Brooks and “I, Too” by Langston Hughes, earning first place honors.

Garcia will move on to compete in the state competition on March 14.
