LUDLOW — Chief Ryan Pease reports that the Ludlow Fire Department battled a three-alarm structure fire that left seven displaced on Saturday night.

On Saturday, Feb. 22, at about 10:02 p.m., the Ludlow Fire Department was dispatched to the area of Brookfield and East Streets for reports of a structure fire.

Responding crews arrived on scene four minutes later to find heavy fire showing from the rear porch of a two-story wood-frame apartment building.

Ludlow Police officers responded to the scene and evacuated the building and adjacent buildings before the Fire Department’s arrival.

A second alarm was struck to bring additional personnel to the scene, including off-duty Ludlow Fire personnel, as four on-duty firefighters were responding to two separate ongoing medical calls at the time of the fire.

The fire then spread to the attic of the structure, which prompted a third alarm to be struck. Responding crews were able to prevent the fire from spreading to surrounding structures.

One resident was transported to an area hospital for treatment of potential smoke inhalation.

Seven residents were displaced and are being assisted by the American Red Cross.

Ludlow Police and the Department of Public Works provided assistance on scene, while Ludlow Central Dispatch provided communication support.

The Massachusetts Department of Fire Services Rehabilitation Unit and Eversource Electric and Gas also responded.

Additional mutual aid was provided by the fire departments of Wilbraham, Westover, Springfield, Palmer, Chicopee and Belchertown.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by Ludlow Police and Fire, with assistance from the Massachusetts State Police Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit attached to the State Fire Marshal’s Office.

A preliminary investigation suggests that the fire is not believed to be suspicious.

“I would like to thank the four Ludlow Police officers who assisted with the evacuation of the residents,” said Chief Pease. “As always, the work of our community and mutual aid partners was essential in our operations, allowing us to operate safely and efficiently.”
