TAUNTON — Chief Steven Lavigne says the Taunton Fire Department fought an exterior house fire overnight, quickly extinguishing the flames and saving the structure.
A neighbor reported flames and smoke on the deck of a multi-family residence at 159 Broadway at 12:02 a.m. Thursday morning.
Taunton Fire immediately responded with Engines 1 and 4, Car 2 and Ladder 2.
There were no injuries. The structure was evacuated, and no residents were displaced.
An initial investigation indicated the flames did not reach the home’s interior. The fire and smoke originated from a tall outdoor ashtray on the deck. The ashtray fire appears to have ignited the building’s vinyl siding, but firefighters stopped the flames before they reached the interior of the structure.
The fire’s cause remains under investigation by the Taunton Fire Department. A full report is pending.
“Our engines made a good, fast response, and the crews on hand made quick work of it,” said Chief Lavigne. “They hit the flames with tank water, knocked the fire down, made sure everyone was out, and there was no extension of flames inside. The guys did a great job.”
