NEW LONDON — Superintendent John Fortney and Principal Charles Langille are pleased to announce that junior Josefina Eliessetch has been named Kearsarge Regional High School’s (KRHS) Student of the Month for January.

The Student of the Month is selected by Kearsarge faculty from a pool of nominated students. This honor is in recognition of the student’s positive conduct and character, both on and off campus, and is an acknowledgment of the individual’s positive moral character and contributions to the school community.

Eliessetch, a junior from Sutton, was selected for the honor based on nominations from school staff and faculty.

Eliessetch is involved at KRHS both academically and athletically. She is a three-sport athlete, competing on the volleyball and indoor and outdoor track and field teams.

Teachers who have worked with Eliessetch note her strong writing skills and willingness to learn. Eliessetch has applied her writing skills to experiences outside of the classroom, writing a biweekly column for the local paper, The Intertown Record, as part of her Journalism Extended Learning Opportunity (ELO). In the column, she writes about important issues from a high school student’s perspective.

“Josefina consistently produces clear, nuanced writing, focused on programs and people within the KRHS community. She amplifies the voices of her peers and highlights some of the programs supported by our school with which those outside the building might be less familiar,” said ELO Coordinator Amanda Leslie. “Josefina welcomes and accepts feedback in her quiet, respectful, attentive way. If you don’t know her, she might not cross your radar, due to her humility and introspection. If you do know her, you are certainly better for it.”

Eliessetch is also accomplished in world language, studying French and Spanish throughout her time at KRHS. Eliessetch will be recognized for her proficiency in Spanish at graduation, where she will receive the New Hampshire Seal of Biliteracy. The award recognizes students who have studied and attained proficiency in two or more languages by high school graduation.

Eliessetch recognized French teacher Gillian Twombly for creating a positive environment for her to explore world language.

“Ms. Twombly is an amazing teacher and has helped me learn so much not just about French, but also about life in general. Not to mention she has a great sense of humor and incredible stories,” said Eliessetch.

Eliessetch’s commitment to academic growth extends beyond the classroom, as she is a member of the National Honor Society and the KRHS Math Team.

“Josefina has been a wonderful addition to the Math Team this year. She is kind and works hard to achieve a deep level of understanding in all her classes,” said Math Teacher Sarah Millard.

Eliessetch is exploring potential careers in international affairs and global economic issues post-graduation, but the real goal for her future is to have a positive impact on people.

“I’m not certain about what my career will involve, but I enjoy looking at global issues and global economic factors and how actions can impact countries in different ways,” said Eliessetch. “I want to have a positive impact on people’s lives and understanding these issues can help improve the situation for other people in the world.”
