WAKEFIELD — Superintendent David DiBarri is proud to recognize nine of the members of the Northeast Metro Tech wrestling team who distinguished themselves at the Massachusetts Vocational Wrestling Championships, including three athletes who won state championships.
The championship tournament was held Saturday, Jan. 25 at Greater Lowell Technical High School in Tyngsborough.
Northeast Metro Tech had 25 student-athletes take part in the tournament, with nine turning in distinguished performances.
In the Girls Division, Shelby Galex, of Woburn, won the state championship in the 150-pound weight class, and Emilia Buggy, of Melrose, won the state championship in the 114-pound weight class.
Meanwhile, Cassidy Robertson, from Woburn, won second place in the 150-pound weight class, and Erica Rodrigues, from Stoneham, won third place in the 165-pound weight class.
In the Boys Division, Jackson Cody, from Gloucester, won the state championship in the 132-pound weight class.
Meanwhile, Nicholas Lopez, from Malden, won fifth place in the 138-pound weight class; Charlie Berry, from Beverly, won sixth place in the 120-pound weight class; Connor Tower, from North Andover, won sixth place in the 126-pound weight class, and Ben Cushing, of Woburn, won his first ever varsity match in the 150-pound weight class.
The Girls Team finished third overall at the state tournament, while the Boys Team finished 10th out of 19 teams total.
“I’m extremely proud of the members of both our Boys and Girls wrestling teams for a great performance at the state vocational championships,” said Superintendent DiBarri. “Our student-athletes at both Northeast Metro Tech and our co-op partner, Bishop Fenwick, have achieved so much and have every reason to be proud.”
