Deputy Chief Timothy Choate to Assume Leadership
SUDBURY — The Sudbury Fire Department announces that Chief John Whalen is retiring following a 45-year career in the fire service, and seven years as head of the department.
Chief Whalen served for 30 years on the Lincoln Fire Department, following in his father’s footsteps; his brothers work on the Lincoln and Concord departments. Chief Whalen joined the Sudbury Fire Department as Assistant Fire Chief in 2010. He ascended to the position of Fire Chief in 2018.
During his time in Sudbury, Chief Whalen focused on collaboration with other Town Departments and building strong relationships with community groups and mutual aid partners. He also guided the Department through growing demands due to residential and commercial development.
Chief Whalen was honored at a reception on Monday, Jan. 27.
Assistant Fire Chief Timothy Choate will succeed Chief Whalen, having been appointed by Town Manager Andrew Sheehan.
