ACTON — Chief Anita Arnum reports that the Acton Fire Department extinguished a mattress fire at an apartment building early Saturday morning.

On Saturday, Feb. 1, at approximately 7:09 a.m. Acton Fire responded to Davis Road Apartments for an automatic fire alarm sounding. While responding to the scene dispatch received several reports of gray smoke and a burning smell coming from the second floor of the apartment building.

Upon arrival, companies located smoke coming from the second floor, stretched a line, and found a burning mattress in Unit B-12, which was quickly extinguished and removed from the unit.

Two occupants had to be evacuated from the unit, and one was transported to an area hospital by the Littleton Fire Department for potential smoke inhalation.

There were no other injuries.

Mutual aid was provided by Maynard Fire Ladder 1, Littleton Fire, District 14 members, and Acton Police.

The apartment unit was deemed uninhabitable. Residents are being assisted by the Red Cross.

“Firefighters did a tremendous job quickly locating and extinguishing the fire,” said Chie Arnum. “We appreciate the assistance provided by our mutual aid partners.”

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by Acton’s Certified Fire Investigator and two members of the District 14 Fire Investigation Team.
