WHITMAN — Chief Timothy Clancy reports that the Whitman Fire Department extinguished a house fire on Tuesday morning, the second in three days.
On Tuesday, Jan. 7, at approximately 6:07 a.m., Whitman Fire received a 911 call reporting that smoke alarms were sounding and there was a possible fire in the single-family house at 32 Fullerton Ave.
On arrival, crews didn’t observe any smoke or fire coming from the house, but upon further investigation, firefighters identified a fire in a wall on the second floor.
Crews quickly extinguished the fire with one hose line and then conducted extensive overhauling on both the first and second floors.
No firefighters or residents were injured as a result of the fire.
The house and its contents were damaged, with a total loss estimated at $50,000.
The residents will not be displaced as a result of the fire.
Following a preliminary investigation, the cause of the fire appears to be the careless disposal of smoking materials.
An East Bridgewater Fire Department ladder truck provided mutual aid at the scene, while a Hanson Fire Department engine provided station coverage. The Whitman Board of Health also responded to the scene.
The fire remains under investigation by the Whitman Fire Department and the Massachusetts State Fire Marshal’s Office.
“Our crews arrived on scene within minutes and were able to identify the location of the fire to conduct a quick attack and prevent the residents from being displaced,” Chief Clancy said. “This is our second house fire in three days, and both are believed to be the result of the careless disposal of smoking materials. I urge residents to take proper care to prevent fires caused by improperly discarded smoking materials and ashes.”
