WHITMAN — Chief Timothy Clancy reports that the Whitman Fire Department extinguished an outside fire that extended into a house on Saturday evening.
On Saturday, Jan. 4, at approximately 4:25 p.m., Whitman Fire responded to a reported fire at 87 Sportsmans Trail, a single-family house.
On arrival, crews saw light smoke showing from the rear of the home and were met by the occupants, who had evacuated on their own. Crews discovered a fire behind the house had spread inside.
Whitman Fire Lt. Bryan Smith requested a working fire assignment to bring mutual aid to the scene.
Crews found fire inside the one-story home and aggressively attacked the flames with two hose-lines.
The house and its contents were damaged, with a total loss estimated at $150,000.
The four residents are temporarily displaced and are receiving assistance from the American Red Cross of Massachusetts.
Following a preliminary investigation, the cause of the fire appears to be the careless disposal of smoking materials.
The Abington, Hanson, East Bridgewater, Bridgewater, and Halifax fire departments provided on-scene mutual aid. The Town of Whitman building commissioner, wire inspector, and Board of Health also assisted at the scene.
The Whitman Emergency Management Agency Citizens Emergency Response Team (C.E.R.T) provided aid for firefighters at the scene.
The fire remains under investigation by the Whitman Fire Department and the Massachusetts State Fire Marshal’s Office.
“Our Whitman Fire crews and mutual aid partners did an excellent job quickly attacking this fire and preventing a total loss,” Chief Clancy said. “This incident serves as a reminder for smokers that carelessly disposing of smoking materials can lead to fires that put you and others at risk.”
