DUNSTABLE — Chief William Farrell reports that the Dunstable Fire Department responded to and extinguished a four-alarm fire on Monday.
On Monday, Dec. 16 at approximately 9:35 am. Dunstable Fire responded to Pleasant Street for reports of a large barn fire.
Crews at the Pleasant Street station were on scene within minutes and observed heavy fire showing from a barn that was attached to a two-story wood frame residence. Firefighters immediately began an aggressive attack of the flames which were spreading quickly through the home.
Residents safely evacuated before the arrival of first responders.
Due to the significant flames, Deputy Chief Patrick Kerrigan stuck a third and later fourth alarm to bring additional resources and support to the scene.
There were no reported injuries. At least two people are displaced and being assisted by family.
Mutual aid was provided by the Pepperell, Tyngsborough, Westford, Groton, Ayer, Devens, Billerica, Lowell, Townsend, Dracut, Littleton Fire Departments and Nashua, N.H., Hollis, N.H., Brookline, N.H., and Pelham, N.H., Fire Departments.
Massachusetts Department of Fire Services Special Operations Rehab Unit also responded to the scene. Merrimack, N.H., Fire Department provided station coverage.
Based on a preliminary investigation by Dunstable Fire and the Massachusetts State Police Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit attached to the State Fire Marshal’s Office, the cause of the fire was determined to be accidental and was most likely caused by wood stove ashes that were improperly disposed of.
