EAST BRIDGEWATER — Chief Michael Jenkins reports that the East Bridgewater Police Department arrested and charged a Brockton man with operating under the influence of alcohol after crashing his car into a tree and a parked vehicle while leaving a trail of debris in a town neighborhood on Tuesday night.
ERIC MAGUIRE, AGE 47, of BROCKTON, was arrested and charged with:
- Operating Under the Influence of Liquor
- Marked Lanes Violation
- Possession of an Open Container of Alcohol in a Motor Vehicle
- Speeding
- Negligent Operation of a Motor Vehicle
On Tuesday, Dec. 3, at approximately 8:30 p.m., East Bridgewater Police were dispatched to Pleasant Street for a report of a car striking a tree in front of a house.
Upon arrival, officers observed a severely damaged white SUV in the front yard of a house on Pleasant Street with debris and tire marks across multiple lawns.
East Bridgewater Fire Department personnel also responded to the crash and located the victim still sitting inside the vehicle. Responding police officers detected a strong odor of alcohol emanating from the vehicle as they spoke to the driver, later identified as MAGUIRE. A search of MAGUIRE’s vehicle revealed spilled liquid from a plastic cup and a half-full bottle of liquor.
MAGUIRE was placed under arrest and transported by East Bridgewater Fire to a nearby hospital for assessment. He was released from the hospital early Wednesday morning and booked at the East Bridgewater Police Department.
A preliminary investigation determined that MAGUIRE was operating the vehicle at approximately 60 mph on Pleasant Street, which has a 30 mph speed limit. MAGUIRE subsequently lost control of the vehicle, veering off the road and striking multiple roadside trash bins before colliding with a parked vehicle in the driveway of 49 Pleasant St. MAGUIRE’s vehicle then hit a tree on the passenger side, and struck a nearby mailbox. The mailbox post snapped, hitting a second parked vehicle at least 30 feet away.
No other injuries were reported.
MAGUIRE is expected to be arraigned in Brockton District Court.
These are allegations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty.
