NEWBURY — Chief Dave Evans reports that the Newbury Fire Department responded early Thursday morning to a serious motor vehicle crash on Interstate 95 that involved an apparent wrong-way driver.
Newbury Fire was dispatched at 12:05 a.m. Thursday to I-95 northbound near exit 81 for a report of a two-vehicle crash. Upon arrival, rescuers found two passenger cars had crashed head-on on the highway. The operators of both vehicles, who were the sole occupants of the vehicles, were trapped inside the two cars, and firefighters began a lengthy and delicate extrication process to free both parties from the wreckage.
After a nearly hour-long process, the two adult male drivers were extricated. One driver was taken by medical helicopter to a trauma center.
During the response and rescue efforts, it was apparent that one motorist was traveling southbound, the wrong way, in the northbound lane when the crash occurred.
The highway was closed in both directions during the initial response, and portions of I-95 northbound remain closed early Thursday morning during the rescue efforts and investigation.
Mutual aid was provided by Newburyport, Georgetown and Rowley firefighters.
The crash will be under investigation by the Massachusetts State Police. Additional information about the two drivers is not available at this time.
