MEDFIELD — Superintendent Jeffrey Marsden and Principal Nat Vaughn are pleased to announce that Blake Middle School has launched a Unified Sports Bocce team.

The Unified Bocce team began its season in late September with an informational meeting, and continued with weekly practices and games held throughout October. There were six exceptionally dedicated unified athletes who are looking forward to inviting others to join the team next season.

Local towns rotate through hosting games on a weekly basis. The team has recently traveled to Foxborough, Walpole and West Bridgewater, where 25 athletes participated in the game.

The season will conclude with a Jamboree on Nov. 4 where four towns will come together in West Bridgewater to celebrate the successful season.

Blake Middle School created its first Unified Sports team, a basketball team, last spring. Since that time, the Unified Sports program has been an opportunity for students to build friendships, develop teamwork skills and play sports in a fun and inclusive environment. Special Olympics has expanded their opportunities to add bocce as another sport in their programming.

The Unified Bocce team and its supporters would like to thank coaches Susan Bycoff and Matt Marenghi for leading them through the season, and all those who have attended their games in support. They also wish to thank the Medfield Coalition for Public Education (MCPE), the Special Education Advisory Council (SEPAC) and the Blake PTO. Their financial support helps all Blake students opportunities to participate in a healthy and fun activity.

Unified Sports brings together students with and without disabilities to train and compete on the same team.
