NEW LONDON — Superintendent John Fortney and Principal Charles Langille are pleased to announce that senior Alex Spinney has been named Kearsarge Regional High School’s Student of the Month for September.

The Student of the Month is selected by the Kearsarge faculty from a pool of nominated students. This honor is in recognition of the student’s positive conduct and character, both on and off campus, and is an acknowledgment of the individual’s positive moral character and contributions to the school community.

Spinney, a senior from Newbury, was selected for the honor based on nominations from school staff and faculty. Spinney was recognized for his determination, commitment and responsibility.

“Alex is a kind, hardworking student, who is dependable in the classroom; I can always rely on him to be prepared and on-task no matter what the assignment,” said Kearsarge English Teacher Lisa Cicoria. “He is also a very strong writer who uses beautiful imagery to convey his experiences. He is the ideal candidate for Student of the Month.”

Spinney is an athlete on the varsity soccer team and a member of the Best Buddies program. He is also a former member of the Mount Sunapee Ski Team, and he will work at the ski resort in the winter.

“Alex is everything a Kearsarge student should be. He is not only intelligent but also hard working; determined to not let anything stand in the way from reaching his goals,” said Kearsarge Social Studies Teacher and Varsity Soccer Coach Couper Gunn. “He overcomes challenges with determination that will serve him so well in life as he has developed the skills necessary to do so.”

One of Spinney’s favorite subjects is Engineering. Spinney says that he enjoys the challenge of developing ideas to address complex problems and then implementing and executing plans while working to improve people’s lives.

He highlights Fundamentals of Engineering as one of his favorite courses at school. Spinney said he “enjoyed the hands-on nature of the course where students were challenged to collaborate and work individually to solve and build solutions to problems.” He also recalled his favorite memory from the course, designing and building a bridge that could withstand a stress test.

Spinney would like to recognize Mathematics Teacher David Muzzey for his constant encouragement throughout Spinney’s high school career.

“Mr. Muzzey was a teacher that I’d like to thank. He was always supportive,
and most importantly challenged me to continuously improve my work and understanding for assessments. He didn’t let me settle when he knew I could work to improve,” said Spinney.

Spinney plans to expand upon his passion for engineering post-graduation, and is currently applying to schools with strong engineering programs. He plans to major in Civil Engineering.
