MEDWAY — Principal Amy McDonald is pleased to share that McGovern Elementary School students participated in the Massachusetts Safe Routes to School Program’s iWalk event on Wednesday, Oct. 9.

iWalk, or International Walk, Bike, and Roll to School Day, is celebrated by schools across the state during the first week of October.

About 350 students, along with family members, McGovern staff and members of the central office team, gathered at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1526 to participate in the half-mile walk to school.

The Medway Police Department also supported students by helping them cross the street and get to school safely.

During the week leading up to the walk, students learned about pedestrian safety and how to represent McGovern by following school rules even outside of the classroom.

Massachusetts Safe Routes to School is a federally funded program administered by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation. The program works to increase safe walking, biking, and rolling among elementary, middle, and high school students by using a collaborative, community-focused approach that bridges the gap between health and transportation.
