CANTON — The Paul Revere Heritage Site is proud to share that Joyce Stenmon, Board member of the Revere and Son Heritage Trust Corporation, was featured on WGBH-FM’s “The Culture Show” on Sept. 24 to discuss the site’s “Copper!” exhibit, which is currently on view in the Historic Barn at the Paul Revere Heritage Site.
WGBH’s popular “The Culture Show” examines society through the lens of art, culture and entertainment.
Stenmon, who co-curated the “Copper!” exhibit with Alexander Goldowsky from Interact LLC, noted in the interview that the U.S. copper industry was launched in Canton when Revolutionary War patriot Paul Revere built the nation’s first copper rolling mill on the site. The restored rolling mill is now the home of the Northern Spy restaurant and Copper Mill Hall.
“The Culture Show” Host Jared Bowen and Stenmon discussed how the wealthy Paul Revere, age 65 at the time, risked his life savings to establish his copper rolling mill on the site in 1801. Revere’s rolled copper sheeting was used by the fledgling U.S. Navy to protect its warships, including the USS Constitution, thus helping to pave the way for U.S. naval independence. His copper also sheathed the dome of the Massachusetts State House.
“The Culture Show” episode can be found here.
The three-floor “Copper!” exhibit Stenmon curated pays homage to Revere’s expertise through historical and contemporary copper artwork modeled after Revere’s copper engraving, hammering, bending and stamping methods.
The exhibit is open to the public on Saturdays from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and on special occasions. Major organizational exhibit contributors include The People’s Academy in Dorchester, Handshouse Studio in Norwell, and the Massasoit Community College Ink Monkeys.
Stenmon chairs the Board’s Committee on Collections, Exhibits, and Education. She is a retired Visual Arts Coordinator and art teacher in the Canton Public Schools. She has worked with art educators and initiated opportunities for students to share their artwork within the community. Currently, she is a part-time program supervisor working with art educators at Massachusetts College of Art and Design.
The Historic Barn is the future home of the Paul Revere Museum of Discovery and Innovation (MoDI) and is slated to open in 2025. Visit paulreveremuseum.org to learn more about the Heritage Site’s history and exhibits.
