NEWPORT — Chief Travis Bingham reports that Newport Police responded to a motor vehicle crash Friday morning.

On Friday, Sept. 13, at about 8:02 a.m., Newport Police were dispatched to the intersection at Short Bluff Road and Union Street for reports of a crash.

Upon arrival to the scene, officers observed two cars, a black Nissan Rogue and and a white GMC Terrain that appeared to have collided. The Nissan Rogue had flipped over, landing on its driver’s side.

Newport Police were assisted on scene by Newport City Fire Department, Newport Ambulance Services and Newport Public Works Department.

Four people were transported to North County Hospital for injuries that are believed to be minor.

A subsequent investigation determined that the driver of the Nissan Rogue was traveling west on Short Bluff Road when they stopped at an intersection and then continued into the intersection. While entering the intersection, the GMC Terrain made contact with the Nissan’s front bumper, causing the Nissan to roll over.

“This incident could have been far worse if the people in the vehicles had not been wearing seatbelts,” said Chief Bingham. “Incidents like these demonstrate how important it is to take safety precautions when operating a motor vehicle. I urge the community to wear their seatbelts and ensure passengers are also properly secured.”
