One Police Officer Injured by Knife-Wielding Fugitive
MIDDLEBOROUGH — Police Chief Joseph Perkins reports that a wanted fugitive will face additional felony charges after he attacked a police officer with a knife during an incident early Wednesday morning.
KEVIN MacDONALD, AGE 42, OF MIDDLEBOROUGH, was arrested and charged with:
- Assault to Murder
- Assault With a Dangerous Weapon (Three Counts)
- Assault and Battery With a Dangerous Weapon (Two Counts)
- Resisting Arrest
- Disorderly Conduct
MacDONALD additionally has three active arrest warrants and will also be held in those cases.
On Wednesday, Aug. 14, at 4:01 a.m., Middleborough Police received a call from the suspect’s mother stating that MacDONALD was acting erratic inside of the residence, located at 284 Cherry St.
Upon arrival, officers were let in by the homeowners, where the individual, identified as MacDONALD was barricaded in his room, shouting, and threatening to cause harm to the officers from inside his room.
Officers attempted multiple times to speak and negotiate with MacDONALD, and encourage him to come out of his room. After a period of time officers decided to make entry into the room. MacDONALD barricaded himself inside his room and used a mattress to block the doorway from the inside.
Officers were unaware at the time that MacDONALD was armed with a knife. As officers pushed into the room, MacDONALD began to exit the room stabbing one officer in the forearm twice with the knife.
Two officers deployed their Taser devices, with one successfully hitting MacDONALD. He dropped to the ground in the hallway and was taken into custody.
The injured police officer was transported by a Coastal Ambulance to an area hospital, where he was treated and released.
MacDONALD was transported to the Middleborough Police Department for booking, and was later transported to a local hospital for treatment.
MacDONALD is expected to be arraigned at Wareham District Court.
MacDONALD is known to police.
“I’m very proud of our officers who displayed great restraint and professionalism in dealing with a dangerous, armed individual during a difficult situation,” said Chief Perkins. “I have spoken with our injured officer and he is doing well. Police officers are required to respond to all manner of unpredictable calls and situations, where their job requires them to place themselves between a dangerous, armed individual and protect citizens.”
These are allegations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty.
