CANTON – Town Administrator Charles Doody reports that the Town of Canton will hold a virtual open house on Wednesday, Aug. 28, about the Town’s Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Transition Plan project.
The session on Aug. 28 will be hosted on Microsoft Teams using this link. Participants are invited to join any time between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.
The purpose of the open house is to provide information on the progress of the Town’s ADA Transition Plan and to gather feedback from the community about the Town’s accessibility.
Attendees will learn about progress on the Town’s plan and will view a presentation with project information, as well as talk to the project team and Town staff.
The ADA Transition Plan allows planners to gather a full scope of the current accessibility of public facilities and programs. Accessibility of all town parks, schools and municipal buildings will be considered. Once the planning phase of the project has been completed, the results will be used to inform future capital expenditures as well as grant applications aimed at correcting barriers to accessibility.
“It is imperative that we ensure our town is inclusive to all residents and visitors, and that we all can enjoy our public spaces,” Town Administrator Charles Doody said. “Accessibility is a fundamental component of building a community that values and respects all its members.”
In October of 2023, the Town of Canton was awarded $40,000 in grant funding for the completion of the Town’s ADA assessment and transition plan for Town facilities.
The Town of Canton received the funding as part of a Community Compact Best Practices Grant, which is a state grant program administered by the State Division of Local Services.
Altura Solutions, LLC was selected in March as a consultant to complete the Town of Canton’s Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Transition Plan.
The Transition Plan created by Altura Solutions, LLC builds on the ADA Self-Evaluation work done in 2016 by KMA Architecture and Accessibility. It is anticipated that the final plan will be completed by February 2025.
Self-Evaluation and Transition Plans are required under the Administrative Requirements of Title II of the ADA. The self-evaluation portion examines the Town’s public facilities, programs, services and more to determine ADA compliance and identify barriers to accessibility. The subsequent Transition Plan assesses identified barriers and guides corrective actions to ensure full ADA accessibility.
