MAYNARD — Town Administrator Greg Johnson is pleased to share that the works of five local artists have been installed in Town Hall following a contest sponsored by the Maynard Cultural District in collaboration with ArtSpace Maynard.
The contest featured 17 works that were publicly displayed in ArtSpace Maynard, an art center located within the District.
The winners were selected through public voting during the Town’s annual Art Walk event on May 4. More than 300 Maynard residents and Town Hall employees participated in the vote.
Five works were selected, representing the top choices of the public and Town Hall employees, as well as the Cultural Council’s additional selections. Each artist either works or lives in town.
The selected artworks are:
- “Walnut Street Reflections,” digital wood cut by Priscilla Alplaugh
- “Bluebird,” block print with hand coloring by Bryan Clocker
- “Morris Birds,” a painting by Cathy Hauke-McCarthy
- “Clivia Blooms Gone Wild,” collage by Lee Eyler
- “Tomato-Tomahto,” quilted cotton by Fran Sharp
Chair of the Cultural District Jenna Dargie had the idea for the installation while on her honeymoon in Bologna, Italy. “The Bologna City Hall had a beautiful museum within it, making it a destination,” Dargie said. “With all of the wonderful artists within our town, I thought, why can’t Maynard be the same?”
Suchitra Mumford, Executive Director of ArtSpace Maynard, said, “When Jenna approached ArtSpace about collaborating on this project we thought it was a great opportunity to put a spotlight on our creative community. This town has a remarkable pool of artistic talent and what better place to showcase that than Town Hall? The pieces now hanging at Town Hall reflect a rich diversity of skill and experience. I’m proud, and very happy to see Maynard be recognized as a creative hub.”
The installation is open for viewing in Town Hall. The Cultural District plans to use this installation as a base to grow the collection of art for the Town.
“These works have beautified our walls and brightened our spirits,” said
Town Administrator Johnson. “We’re very grateful to our friends on the Maynard Cultural District and ArtSpace Maynard for making this happen.”
The Maynard Cultural District and Town of Maynard would like to thank ArtSpace for organizing the display, the Maynard community for voting for and supporting the project, and Kyle Brainard for installing the selected pieces.
