WAREHAM — Superintendent Matthew D’Andrea is pleased to share that the Wareham Public Schools is offering various summer programming opportunities for students in grades K-12. Two of the summer programs offered were made possible through the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) 21st Century Community Learning Center (CCLC) grant.

The programs, Community, Academic, Recreation and Enrichment (CARE) and Successful Adaptive Innovating Learning (SAIL) provide hands-on, project-based learning with an English Language Arts (ELA) academic focus. This year, more than 300 students all grades are participating in summer programming.

These programs began on July 1, Monday through Thursday, from 8:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. The programs are offered through August 1.

The CAREprogram is a free six-week summer program for students in grades K-7, at Wareham Middle School and Wareham Elementary School. Students in the CARE program are participating in classes such as camp inventions, crafting, violin, art animation, nature club, fit and fun, STEAM, drama, cooking with math, hiking club and more.

The SAIL program is also a six-week summer program that takes place at Wareham High School for students in grades 8-12. This program also offers students the ability to gain lost credit hours. Students are participating in SAIL summer classes of their choice, including drama, printmaking, film study, fishing, culinary arts and more.

Both CARE and SAIL programs focus on contributing to deepening student learning through engaging in academically enriching programming that is real world, relevant and interactive. During the summer, students experience a coherent and holistic range of programming, which allows them to feel empowered to make informed choices in life and prepare for college and future careers.

In addition to academic summer programming, Wareham High School also partners with the Buzzards Bay Coalition and the Gleason YMCA to provide five weeks of off-site programming for students at the Onset Bay Center. Through this program, students are learning to sail, kayak, paddle board and explore Wicketts Island. Additionally, the YMCA allows students to swim in the outdoor pool and participate in one activity of their choice from rock wall climbing, rope walking, archery and more.

“I am thrilled that we can continue to provide summer enrichment opportunities for students in our district. They are an excellent way to keep students active over the summer and have them explore skills and opportunities unavailable to them during the school year,” said Superintendent D’Andrea. “I would like to thank our Beyond School Time Director Jane Fondulis for organizing and promoting these programs.”

DESE’s 21st Century Community Learning Centers are federal grants that design and implement high quality academically enriching programs for student learning. These grants promote the development of support systems that engage students and families in ways that are culturally relevant, and leverage the knowledge, strengths, and assets of students, families, educators and the community.
