The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning for the surrounding counties, as temperatures are expected to be in the 90s and heat indices even higher over the next several days. The Town of Blackstone is taking proactive measures to ensure the safety and well-being of its residents during this heat wave.
Cooling Center Open 24/7: The Blackstone Senior Center, located at Town Hall, 15 St. Paul Street in Blackstone, will be open as a cooling center 24/7, beginning Wednesday, June 19, and lasting through Friday, June 21. Water and snacks will be available. Residents arriving to use the cooling center after 4:30 p.m. are asked to check in at the Dispatch Center window in the Police Department. If residents need transportation to the cooling center, they can call the Senior Center’s Transportation Department at 508-876-5133.
Heat Safety Tips for Residents:
- Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Avoid drinks with caffeine or alcohol, as they can dehydrate you.
- Limit Outdoor Activities: Try to stay indoors during the hottest parts of the day, typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If you must be outside, take frequent breaks in the shade and wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.
- Use Fans and Air Conditioning: Use fans and air conditioning to cool down your home. If you do not have air conditioning, visit the cooling center or other air-conditioned places like shopping malls or libraries.
- Check on Neighbors: Check on elderly neighbors, those with health conditions, and anyone without access to air conditioning to ensure they are safe and comfortable.
Pet Safety Tips:
- Keep Pets Hydrated: Ensure pets have access to plenty of fresh water.
- Avoid Hot Pavement: Walk pets in the early morning or late evening when the pavement is cooler to prevent burns on their paws.
- Provide Shade: If pets are outside, ensure they have access to shade and a cool place to rest.
“We urge all residents to take this heat warning seriously and take the necessary precautions to stay safe,” said Chad Lovett, Town Administrator. “Our cooling center is open, and we are here to support the community during this extreme weather event.”
